How do stories change when you change the place or the time they happen? How do stories change between reading a book to watching actors bring the story to life? Do you prefer to imagine what the characters look like or see pictures of them?
A brand new adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden gives the perfect way to explore these questions. The Secret Garden on 81st Street, a graphic novel by Ivy Noelle Weir brings Mary Lennox to modern day New York City where she discovers a house full of secrets, including the neglected rooftop garden hidden behind a locked door.
For a fun comparison activity:
Have a family movie night and watch one the many film adaptations of “The Secret Garden,” then read the graphic novel The Secret Garden on 81st Street by Ivy Noelle Weir. For bonus points also read the original Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Discuss together the following questions (and any others you think of):
What changed between the different adaptations? What stayed the same?
Did you like or dislike the characters more in one version than the others?
Which version did you enjoy the most and why?
Think about what changes you would make to the story and what you would keep the same (and feel free to tell us your ideas in the comments below)
