Book Review: Norse Myths by Matt Ralphs

Learn the ancient tales of Norse mythology in this beautifully illustrated nonfiction book! With incredibly stylization from illustrator Katie Ponder, children will love reading about Norse gods such as Thor, Loki, Odin, Freya, and more! This book includes a section about the history of ancient Norse culture as well, and the role mythology played within it. The author delves into individual stories within Norse mythology as well as pages to the separate gods and characters within this pantheon. This is a dense read, not recommended for younger readers due to instances of mythological violence and some frightening illustrations. However, kids who are ready to read this subject manner and who are fans of mythology will love this book.

Overall, I give this book 10/10 stars! Wonderfully illustrated and well told, this book is worth the read..

Great for fans of mythology of all kinds - particularly kids who are fans of Thor from Marvel's Avengers and want to learn more about actual Norse mythology!
Suggested age range: 9+ years

Book Review: When Stars Are Scattered By Victoria Jamieson & Omar Mohamed

This National Book Award Finalist, told by former Somali refugee Omar Mohammed, is about growing up in a refugee camp with his brother. Though this story contains heavy subjects, the uplifting, but bittersweet, ending paired with a note from the author in the back makes this a very fulfilling read. Fans of Roller Girl and All's Faire in Middle School will recognize Victoria Jamieson's art style, with colorful illustrations and scenic landscapes. Overall, I give this graphic novel a 10/10.

Great for fans of New Kid as well as and readers interested in autobiographical graphic novels! This is also a good read for children whose families gone through the immigration process.

Suggested age range: 9-13 years.

Here is a photo of Omad Mohammed, the person who told his early life story to author and illustrator Victoria Jamieson, and his brother Hassan. Omar and his brother are now in their 30s!:

Book Review: Queen of the Sea by Dylan Meconis

Queen of the Sea by Dylan Meconis is a historical fiction graphic novel, loosely based on writings about exile of Queen Elizabeth I by her sister, Queen Mary. This graphic novel includes prose alongside an intriguing plot, and several different art styles. The main character, Margaret, is a strong female lead, as well as a relatable character. Margaret is a young girl who lives on an island filled with nuns, living out her days completing lessons, doing embroidery, and helping out with chores. This all changes when one day, a mysterious woman arrives. As Margaret grows to be her friend, she finds that their fates may be more entwined than she ever thought possible. Overall, I give this book 9.5/10 stars!

Great for fans of Royal Diaries, The Beatryce Prophecy, and The Inquisitor's Tale.

Suggested age range: 10-14 years.

Book Review: Sorceline by Sylvia Douyé

Sorceline by French author Sylvia Douyé is the first in a series of middle grade graphic novel books. This is a new English translation that has just arrived at the Main Library. Join natural magic user Sorceline as she studies cryptozoology on the Isle of Vorn! Sorceline, along with her friends and the professors at her school, are uncovering the mystery of why the creatures on the island keep falling ill. This is a magical tale full of twists and turns, with a surprising shock at the end! The illustrations, by Paola Antista, help make this read even more magical. This story is fast-paced and information-packed, and can be a bit tricky at times. Overall, I give this book 7/10 stars.
