“The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge” is a classic children’s book that celebrates the dedication of a small lighthouse to its duty of keeping boats on the river safe, even as it fears that the construction of a great gray bridge will mean it is no longer needed.
This story, written by Hildegarde Hoyt Swift, is based on a real life lighthouse that has stood on the banks of the Hudson River since 1921. The ‘great gray bridge’ of the story is the George Washington Bridge. You can visit the lighthouse and learn how Swift’s picture book inspired an outpouring of love for the little lighthouse that protected it and resulted in it being named a historic place.
We encourage you to read the book and take a field trip to see the Little Red Lighthouse at Fort Washington State Park.
